FASTag Annual Pass Announced: 200 Highway Trips for ₹3,000 Starting August 15
In a move aimed at streamlining highway travel and reducing toll-related delays, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has introduced a new FASTag-based Annual Pass. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari made the announcement on Wednesday via social media platform X, stating that the scheme will officially take effect from August 15, 2025.
The new pass, priced at ₹3,000 per year, is designed specifically for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. According to the ministry, the pass will be valid for 200 toll plaza trips or one year from the date of activation—whichever comes first. The initiative aims to offer smoother and more affordable access to India’s growing network of national highways, where FASTag usage has already become mandatory for toll collection.
“This initiative will further enhance convenience for private vehicle owners, reduce congestion at toll booths, and encourage digital payments in line with the government’s vision for smart infrastructure,” Gadkari said in his post.
FASTag, the electronic toll collection system that uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, was made mandatory for all vehicles on national highways in February 2021. Since then, the system has greatly improved traffic flow and reduced the need for cash transactions at toll plazas. The newly launched Annual Pass is expected to boost usage even further, particularly among frequent travellers.
The ministry clarified that this pass is not applicable for commercial or goods vehicles, which fall under a separate toll structure. Vehicle owners interested in availing the pass can purchase or activate it through authorized banks, digital wallets, and official FASTag portals starting August 15.
This annual pass is seen as a step forward in making road travel in India more user-friendly and cost-effective. With over 1,000 toll plazas already FASTag-enabled across the country, the Annual Pass could offer significant savings and convenience for daily commuters, long-distance drivers, and weekend travellers alike.
