Samsung Galaxy Unpacked: Foldables Take the Spotlight, But No Tri-Fold Yet
Samsung pulled out all the stops at its summer Galaxy Unpacked event in New York City, putting the spotlight firmly on its foldable device lineup. Themed around “Foldables,” the event unveiled the much-anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, and a new Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, along with a redesigned One UI 8 optimized specifically for foldable smartphones. Samsung also introduced the latest Galaxy Watch 8 series and a minor upgrade to the Galaxy Watch Ultra, alongside new artificial intelligence (AI) features that aim to make its devices smarter and more user-friendly.
Despite speculation, the rumored tri-fold smartphone — possibly called the Galaxy G Fold — and Samsung’s secretive Project Moohan were noticeably absent. However, the company hinted that developments on the tri-fold front are still underway, sparking hope for a future reveal.
One of the standout announcements was Samsung’s all-new One UI 8, which the company calls a “next-generation interface” built for foldables. It emphasizes AI-enhanced multitasking, allowing users to easily move, resize, and manage pop-up windows. For Flip users, the cover screen experience has been redesigned for better productivity, with more accessible controls and app functionality without having to unfold the device.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung’s latest flagship foldable, is thinner, lighter, and more powerful. Now measuring just 4.2mm thick when unfolded and 8.9mm when folded, it sports a larger 6.5-inch external screen and an expansive 8-inch internal display. Under the hood, it’s powered by the new Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, with up to 16GB of RAM and a massive 1TB of storage.
Camera capabilities also see a major leap, with a new 200MP wide-angle sensor, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 10MP telephoto camera. The device is equipped with a 4,400mAh battery and supports 25W wired and 15W wireless charging.
While the elusive tri-fold remains missing, Samsung’s Unpacked event reaffirmed its dominance in the foldables market, offering hardware refinement, deeper AI integration, and meaningful software enhancements.
