Centre Agrees to Debate on Operation Sindoor in Parliament Monsoon Session, Decision Pending on Bihar Electoral Roll Issue
With the Monsoon Session of Parliament set to begin on Monday, the central government has agreed to the Opposition’s demand for a debate on Operation Sindoor, according to sources quoted by The Indian Express on Sunday. The move follows increasing pressure from the Opposition INDIA bloc, which has been calling for accountability and clarity on several key national issues.
While the Centre has given the green light for a discussion on Operation Sindoor, sources noted that a decision on whether to allow a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar is still pending. The revision process by the Election Commission has sparked concerns among opposition leaders, who have raised questions over its timing and transparency ahead of state elections.
On Saturday, the INDIA bloc convened a virtual meeting involving 24 of its member parties to finalise their strategy for the Monsoon Session. The alliance reached a consensus on eight major issues they intend to raise during the session. These include the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, the government’s handling of Operation Sindoor, US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire announcement, India’s broader foreign policy approach, and the ongoing electoral roll revision in Bihar.
The meeting saw participation from several key Opposition figures. Congress was represented by Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, K C Venugopal, and Jairam Ramesh. Other prominent attendees included Ram Gopal Yadav (Samajwadi Party), Abhishek Banerjee (TMC), Uddhav Thackeray and Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena-UBT), Sharad Pawar and Jayant Patil (NCP-SP), and Omar Abdullah (National Conference).
Leaders from regional and Left parties such as Hemant Soren (JMM), Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Tiruchi Siva (DMK), D Raja (CPI), M A Baby (CPI-M), and Dipankar Bhattacharya (CPI-ML) also joined. Representatives from Kerala Congress (M), RSP, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and IUML were present as well.
The Monsoon Session is expected to be a politically charged one, with the Opposition gearing up for a unified and vocal presence in Parliament.
