Himachal Pradesh continues to face severe monsoon challenges as a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall was issued for isolated areas in three districts—Kangra, Sirmaur, and Mandi—on Sunday, July 6, 2025. Cloudbursts were reported in Mandi and Chamba districts, causing significant damage but, thankfully, no casualties were reported, according to officials.
Since the monsoon began on June 20, Himachal Pradesh has suffered 78 fatalities, with 50 deaths directly linked to rain-related disasters such as cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides. The Meteorological Department (MeT) has also issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in seven other districts, excluding the tribal regions of Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.
In Mandi, heavy rainfall led to the washing away of pedestrian bridges over the Kugdi and Kotarang drains. Additionally, around 50 bighas of private land adjacent to the Kotarang drain were swept away, highlighting the destructive power of the ongoing rains. Meanwhile, in Chamba’s Churah area, another cloudburst struck on Sunday morning, triggering flash floods that damaged a newly constructed bridge over the Kanghela drain. This has resulted in four panchayats being cut off from the main road, causing severe disruption for local residents.
The situation remains dire in Hamirpur district, where a 29-year-old migrant woman named Kiran from Bihar was swept away in the rising waters of the Shukra Khad river in the Barsar area. Kiran worked at a crusher unit and was reportedly washing utensils outside her house when the floods swept her away. Search and rescue teams are actively engaged in efforts to locate her.
In Una district, heavy rains exceeding 110 mm since Saturday evening caused the Swan river to overflow, resulting in water damage to a petrol pump in Ghaluwal and flooding of several houses in Dhalwal. Authorities in Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts remain on high alert as the monsoon continues to batter the region, urging residents to stay cautious and heed safety advisories.
